Why Is No One Here?
We’ve been open now for four summers in Baja California Sur. And every summer, I have the same moment.
Some random Wednesday around two in the afternoon. I’ve finished my workday, so I head down to the Topia pool. It’s sunny. Breezy. About 85 degrees. The weather is gorgeous and the whole place is quiet.
Most of the time it’s just me and Kris sitting there, taking up all this space to ourselves. Which is when the thought hits me every year: Why is there nobody on retreat right now?
This is some of the most beautiful weather we get all year. Meanwhile I know people up north are roasting in the heat. It’s crazy that nobody’s here.
But I know why.
People have an assumption about what summer in Mexico is like. And that assumption is wrong. Because of it, people are missing out on one of the best times of year to retreat in Baja.
The Assumption
A lot of people picture Mexico in the summer as brutally hot, humid, buggy, miserable.
But Mexico is a huge country. Just like the United States, the climate changes depending on where you are. And Baja — especially our little Pacific pocket in Pescadero — is its own thing entirely.
Where Topia Sits Matters
We’re on the Pacific side of Baja California Sur, which means steady ocean breezes and the influence of the Sierra de la Laguna mountains. Together they create a microclimate that stays much milder than people expect.
It’s also very different from Cabo. Once summer starts, Cabo can easily be 10–15 degrees hotter than Pescadero. So if someone looks up the weather in Cabo and assumes that’s what it’s like where we are, it isn’t an accurate picture.
In Pescadero, daytime highs during peak summer sit right in the high 80s.
July average high: 88°F
August average high: 89°F
Warm, yes. But not the kind of heat people imagine when they hear “Mexico in the summer.”
A Different Kind of Escape
Most people think of Mexico as a place to escape the winter cold.
But it can also be a wonderful place to escape the summer heat. In fact, many of the places people are coming from in the United States are hotter than Pescadero in August.
Phoenix — 105°F
Dallas — 97°F
Houston — 95°F
Tulsa — 93°F
Nashville — 90°F
Atlanta — 89°F
Denver — 88°F
Pescadero?
About 88–89°F.
In other words, the weather often lines up with — or is cooler than — the places people are trying to escape.
The Timing People Get Wrong
Another misconception is when it actually gets hot here.
June is surprisingly mellow, often a little overcast, which keeps temperatures comfortable. July and August are the sweet spot — warm beach weather, sunny days, and steady Pacific breezes.
The hotter, stormier stretch tends to arrive later — September into early October — which is why we close during that time.
Meanwhile July and August sit quietly as one of the nicest stretches of weather we get all year.
So I’ll Say It
Summer at Topia is underrated.
Beautiful weather. Quiet town. Wide open beaches.
Every year I sit by the pool thinking the same thing: People are missing out.
And just to make the whole thing a little more ridiculous…
These beautiful months also come with our low season rates, which means lodging is 25% lower than the rest of the year.
So not only is the weather fantastic — it’s also the most affordable time to host a retreat at Topia.
